Adware programs have a number of characteristics and perform a number of activities; showing you adverts with the tag "Ads by name" being just one of them. Some adware traits may be a nuisance, others can be fairly easy to ignore but some can actually cause you harm or make using your PC a real pain in the neck. Therefore it makes sense that adware programs like this one are something that you should try and avoid.
What exactly are "Ads by name"?
The reason that so many people talk about Ads by name and adware in the same breath is because adware as a standalone type of malware and PUPs, although strictly speaking not malware, do operate in a similar manner. One of those being that they both install themselves without your knowledge.
There are a number of different things that adware and similar potentially unwanted programs do; some of them install a new toolbar on your PC, some change your home page or your default search engine, and others bombard you with online advertising.
Its main characteristic is to display ADS BY name may well send your stress levels soaring. They will show you an endless stream of pop up and pop under windows, as well as other adverts, including banner advertising.
Furthermore clicking on these adverts, whether on purpose or by accident, can end up directing you to some pretty unsavory websites – regardless of what the actual advert was for. The main point of adware is to drive traffic, and possibly sales, to a third party website. Most of the adverts displayed by this adware are random and will simply redirect you to dodgy websites. However, there's also a spyware module packed with this adware that can track your browsing history and browsing habits in general and send all this information to third parties, mostly advertising networks. As a result, you may start seeing more targeted "Ads by name" on your computer.
Other problems caused by adware
And that's not all you have to contend with as adware can also make your PC run more slowly, cause your internet to keep crashing, create issues of conflict with other programs installed on your machine, and – even more worryingly – interfere with your computer's security, leaving you open to attack by more serious forms of malware.
How are Ads by name installed?
There are three ways in which adware programs are installed on your computer. They might have already been installed when you purchase a new PC, they can infect you when you visit a website that's been compromised by adware, or they may have been bundled with another program. While for the most part these programs will be free (freeware or shareware), adware has been known to be packaged with more legitimate, or even paid for, software. Lower the risk of downloading adware by reading License Agreements extremely carefully when you're downloading anything. ADS BY name are mentioned in the small print, so make sure you know just what it is you're installing. If your computer is already infected and you don't know how to remove "Ads by name", please follow the steps in the removal guide below.
